Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley are two ends of the same inland distribution belt. I-81 runs from Hagerstown north through Carlisle, Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg; I-78 branches east toward Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton, then crosses the Delaware into New Jersey. That geometry puts Lehigh Valley buildings within a short drayage of the Port of New York and New Jersey, and puts Cumberland County within reach of the Port of Baltimore on I-83 and PhilaPort by way of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Norfolk Southern's Rutherford Yard at Harrisburg and Enola Yard across the Susquehanna keep rail volume in the same lanes.
Warehouse clusters follow the interchanges. Carlisle and Mechanicsburg grew around the I-81 and Turnpike crossing, with the Giant Company grocery distribution complex at Carlisle among the anchors. In the valley, the Lehigh Valley Industrial Parks on former Bethlehem Steel ground and the Route 33 corridor through Bethlehem and Palmer townships hold big-box and grocery DCs, including Walmart and Amazon buildings at Bethlehem and Breinigsville, alongside food operations such as Ocean Spray. Confectionery and snack production around Hershey and Hanover adds its own outbound freight.
Dock labor demand tracks import peaks more than local harvests, though Adams County apples and South Mountain orchard fruit push packing volume through the region from late summer into November. Third-party unloading crews spend the fall on floor-loaded import containers, retail resets and grocery cross-dock, and cold storage work runs year round. Freight unloaders on second and third shift are routine where DCs receive continuously.

Reading for Harrisburg-Lehigh Valley, PA operators
- How a lumping agency writes a quote a facility can say yes to
Most lost quotes are not lost on price. They are lost because the receiving manager could not tell what the number covered, could not defend it internally, or could not compare it to the quote sitting next to it.

Questions about dock labor in Harrisburg-Lehigh Valley, PA
What drives the busiest lumping season in central Pennsylvania?
Import peak season. Containers drayed in from the Port of New York and New Jersey and the Port of Baltimore build from midsummer through late fall, overlapping with retail resets and with Adams County apple packing that runs from late August into November.
Do crews here handle port containers or domestic trailers?
Both, often in the same building. Lehigh Valley and Cumberland County DCs take floor-loaded import containers off I-78 and I-81 and ship palletized outbound, so trailer unloading crews are usually sorting and restacking to pallet on the receiving side.
Is cold chain work available in this market?
Yes. Grocery distribution around Carlisle and Bethlehem, plus food and beverage operations in the valley and confectionery volume near Hershey, keep refrigerated and temperature-controlled unloading steady outside the fall import surge.
