Delaware's freight sits on a narrow strip between I-95 and the Delaware River. The Port of Wilmington, owned by the Diamond State Port Corporation and operated under concession by Enstructure, is a leading gateway for fresh fruit and juice concentrate, with Dole and Chiquita perishables crossing its refrigerated docks alongside imported autos. Norfolk Southern and CSX both reach the Wilmington area, and the state has designated the Edgemoor site downriver for a new container terminal.
Warehouses cluster in New Castle County along I-95, US 13 and Route 1, including Newport's Boxwood Road site, where Amazon built a fulfillment center on the former General Motors plant grounds, and the Middletown corridor served by US 301. Downstate, dock labor follows poultry: Perdue in Georgetown, Mountaire in Selbyville and Millsboro, with the Delmarva Central Railroad and US 113 carrying freight south.
Banana discharge is weekly rather than seasonal, so third-party unloading and cross-dock work stay steady, while Sussex County sweet corn, watermelon and lima bean harvests, plus the summer grocery push down Route 1, tighten crews from June through Labor Day.

Questions about dock labor in Delaware
What kind of dock work drives lumper demand in Delaware?
Two patterns. On the Delaware River, banana and other fresh fruit vessels discharge into refrigerated dockside warehouses at the Port of Wilmington and transload to reefer trailers, which is weekly work rather than a season. Inland, New Castle County distribution centers along I-95 and Route 1 need floor-loaded container and cross-dock unloading, and Sussex County poultry plants move dry and frozen outbound.
Is there a busy season for freight unloaders in Delaware?
Summer. Sussex County sweet corn, watermelon and lima bean harvests overlap with the Route 1 beach-season grocery and convenience resupply into Rehoboth, Lewes and Bethany, so crews get tight from June through Labor Day. Port fruit volume runs through the year and does not follow that curve.
Do crews need cold chain experience here?
Often yes. Refrigerated work is normal on the Wilmington fruit docks and at the poultry plants downstate, so ask whether a crew is used to reefer trailers, palletizing chilled product and keeping doors closed on temperature-sensitive loads before booking them.
