Fresno's freight geography is a corridor rather than a harbor. State Route 99 carries north-south traffic between Sacramento and Bakersfield, Interstate 5 runs parallel down the west side of the county, and State Route 152 over Pacheco Pass is the standing link to Oakland. Both western railroads cross the metro: BNSF lists a Fresno intermodal facility on its Stockton to Bakersfield main line, and Union Pacific's route runs past Calwa Yard on the south edge of the city. With no port of its own, the market takes import boxes by dray from Oakland and by truck up Highway 99 from Southern California.

Distribution has concentrated in south Fresno, along American, Orange and Central avenues between Highway 99 and Highway 41, where Amazon's fulfillment center, an Ulta Beauty distribution center and Gap Inc.'s Fresno DC anchor the newer big buildings. Older warehousing follows Golden State Boulevard through Selma, Fowler and Kingsburg, while Madera picks up sites north of the river and the Visalia Industrial Park, home to VF Outdoor, sits an hour south.

Dock labor here answers to two calendars. Retail volume builds from late summer into December. Agriculture runs longer: stone fruit out of Reedley, Sanger and Kingsburg from May into September, table grapes and raisins around Selma and Fowler from July into November, almonds from August, and eastern valley navel citrus from November into spring. Much of that is reefer freight, floor loaded or hand stacked, so sorting, repack and palletizing land in front of freight unloaders as often as straight trailer unloading does.

Questions about dock labor in Fresno, CA

When is lumper demand highest in the Fresno area?

Two peaks overlap. Produce and processing volume climbs from May with stone fruit and holds through the grape, raisin and almond harvests into November. Retail distribution centers in south Fresno add their own build from August into December, so late summer is the tightest stretch for crews.

Do Fresno crews handle reefer and floor loaded produce work?

Regularly. Much of the freight moving through the metro is temperature controlled, and inbound loads from packing houses and processors often arrive floor loaded or hand stacked. Sorting, repack and palletizing are normal parts of the scope, not add ons, and crews are expected to work in cold rooms.

Is there port drayage work here?

Not directly. Fresno has no marine terminal, so import containers come by dray over Pacheco Pass from Oakland or up Highway 99 from the Los Angeles and Long Beach complex. That makes transload and container to trailer repack a steady part of what lumper services in Fresno are asked to cover, especially for ag exports moving the other way.
