Interstate 90 enters from Idaho at Lookout Pass and runs southeast to Billings, where Interstate 94 continues toward North Dakota and the Bakken. Interstate 15 climbs north through Butte and Great Falls to the Port of Sweet Grass, the state's main commercial truck crossing into Alberta. BNSF's Hi-Line transcontinental route crosses the northern tier through Shelby and Havre, a division point with a large yard, while the southern line through Missoula, Helena, Bozeman and Laurel returned to BNSF operation from Montana Rail Link in 2023.
Dock labor here follows commodities rather than import surges. Wheat, barley and pulse crops move through country elevators and shuttle loaders. Western Sugar Cooperative's Billings factory runs a beet campaign from fall into winter, refining at Billings and Laurel keeps drum and packaged freight steady, and oilfield supply houses in Sidney and Glendive work off Bakken activity. Consumer goods arrive on long inbound hauls from Salt Lake City, Spokane and Denver, so grocery, beverage and building-products warehouses use third-party unloading on floor-loaded trailers and cross-dock nights. Billings holds the state's deepest bench of freight unloaders, and smaller markets commonly source trailer unloading crews from there.

Questions about dock labor in Montana
When is dock labor hardest to book in Montana?
Late summer through winter. Grain and pulse harvest fills elevators and warehouses from August, the Billings sugar beet campaign runs from fall into winter, and storms on the Hi-Line and I-15 bunch delayed trucks into the same receiving windows. Building appointments early in that stretch is the difference between a scheduled crew and a scramble.
Can lumper crews reach markets outside Billings?
Often yes, but with travel. Montana's warehouse base is thin outside Billings, so crews frequently dispatch from there to Great Falls, Missoula, Bozeman, Havre and the eastern oilfield towns. Expect a day or more of notice and mileage in the quote for anything beyond the immediate metro.
