Nearly every Class I railroad meets in Illinois, which is why the state's dock labor market is really several markets. Chicago carries most of the volume: BNSF's Logistics Park Chicago at Elwood, Union Pacific's Global IV at Joliet, CSX at Bedford Park and Norfolk Southern's Landers yard feed cross-dock and transload buildings within a short drayage of the ramp.

Downstate, warehousing follows the interstates. Union Pacific's Global III ramp at Rochelle sits beside food plants and cold storage on I-88 and I-39. I-55 and I-70 converge in the Metro East opposite St. Louis, where Edwardsville and Pontoon Beach hold big-box distribution. I-57 and I-70 cross at Effingham, and I-74 ties Peoria to Bloomington-Normal.

Food and farm freight sets the calendar. Archer Daniels Midland's Decatur complex, Hormel's Rochelle Foods plant and the Libby's pumpkin cannery at Morton push volume from late summer into October, the same window when import boxes off the Elwood and Joliet ramps hit their peak. Freight unloaders in Illinois work reefer, floor-loaded grocery and palletized big-box, often on the same shift.

  1. The CenterPoint Intermodal Center at Joliet and Elwood pairs BNSF's Logistics Park Chicago with Union Pacific's Global IV terminal, so import containers can be lifted, drayed and stripped inside one industrial campus.

  2. Union Pacific's Global III terminal in Rochelle puts a mainline intermodal ramp next to northern Illinois food processing and cold storage on the I-88 and I-39 corridors.

  3. Chicago is the only city where all six remaining Class I railroads interchange, and the CREATE program exists to untangle that traffic, which keeps rail-to-truck transload and cross-dock work concentrated in the metro.

  4. Illinois leads the country in pumpkin production, and the Libby's cannery at Morton runs its pack from late summer into October, a seasonal spike in reefer and raw-product trailer unloading.

  5. The Illinois International Port District at Lake Calumet connects the Illinois Waterway and the Great Lakes, moving bulk and breakbulk that transloads to truck on the far South Side.

  6. Archer Daniels Midland is headquartered in Decatur and operates processing there, anchoring inbound and outbound dock volume on the I-72 and I-57 corridors.

Questions about dock labor in Illinois

When does Illinois dock volume peak?

Late summer through the fall. The Morton pumpkin pack, harvest movements around Decatur and the Illinois River elevators, and the import peak arriving at the Elwood and Joliet ramps all land in the same window, followed by holiday grocery. Crews that can add shifts in September and October are worth lining up before August.

What kind of freight do lumper crews handle outside Chicago?

Food and manufacturing. Rochelle and the I-88 corridor run cold storage and processing, so reefer and mixed pallet work is common. The Metro East and Effingham crossroads see big-box and consumer goods off I-55, I-70 and I-57, and Peoria and Bloomington-Normal add industrial and parts freight.
